I started it at 3:45 p. I wasn't too sure about Hart. I thought he was too smug and aloof and I thought that this book might go into a controlling plot. From the beginning chapter, where we accompany Jeanette in meeting Hart on their first date, we watch as that question unfolds itself in her own life. Perhaps four are dedicated to this story. Starting out with Jeanette, a woman and single mother of a young daughter, who is recovering from a divorce, we learn of her struggles to find her way, as she writes her first book.

I have read everything she's ever written, and I own most of it. Witty, sprightly, surprisingly, this deeply original and utterly captivating new novel by A. These questions and many more are covered in this novel, rich in lyrical prose, charming characters with similar lives centuries apart. My grandfather, Edmund Mortimer, at the age of 16 sailed around the world on the Bark St. Manette Ansay grew up in Wisconsin among 67 cousins and over 200 second cousins. Their story felt like filler in an already slight book.

I liked how she chose to narrate this, and I like what's left up in the air because to resolve it neatly would ruin the book. The blurb on the back of the paperback edition I read promised an eventual triumph of determination and I kept hoping Ellen would evenutally triumph, but the end only suggested she was about to break away. I was kind of a drag during class discussions and pretty much that year, but it made for some terrific writing! Escher's picture is really interesting. It only gives me pain and fills my heart with unspeakable woe. Battling feelings of loss and apathy in the wake of a painful divorce, novelist Jeanette struggles to complete a book about the long-term relationship between Clara Schumann, a celebrated pianist and The acclaimed author of Vinegar Hill returns with a story of two unlikely romances—one historical, the other modern-day—separated by thousands of miles and well over a century. Though the story interweaves past and present, the transitionings of these times and chapters are seamless and incredibly smooth. Manette Ansay's original blend of fiction and history captures the timeless nature of love and friendship between women and men.

Reinhardt Hempel, a scientist from Leipzig, the birthplace of Clara, intrigues her and is the first man she has dated in nineteen years. It is not incredibly traditional and might feel jarring until you get used to it… though its uniqueness and may just keep you reading. This book, above all, is an intriguing exploration of three fine and complicated souls immortalized by their music. Jeanette is writing the story of Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms. I love how Brahms relationship with Clara Schumann was juxtaposed against the modern relationship of Jeannette and Hart. Reinhardt Hempel, a scientist from Leipzig, the birthplace of Clara, intrigues her and is the first man she has dated in nineteen years. I have her books ranked in my head, and one is in my top ten books ever.

It's taken from a letter that Brahms wrote to Schumann, and it's so bittersweet - this longing and wishing for intimacy and closeness, while knowing that it's futile. If I had any prior knowledge, or any personal interest in the lives of Clara and Johannes I think I would have absolutely adored this fictionalized account of their lives. It's hard to be sympathetic to Jeanette's self-sabotage, or to fathom Hart's unreliably clinical attitude to their relationship, harder still to understand the necessity of using them to frame the narrative at all. Manette Ansay's original blend of fiction and history captures the timeless nature of love and friendship between women and men. Good Things I Wish You is a beautiful, tender, and wonderful read and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a delightful book to read in an afternoon. Manette Ansay is brilliant at depicting that roller coaster emotional ride that a relationship between scarred middle aged people would inevitably be. The truth is, this couple, not unlike Clara and Johannes, want their first loves to stay, perhaps like it was in the beginning. This was a great find. Manette, I have so enjoyed reading Limbo and find your mind and story shares so much with mine. It has been so many years since we spent time together in the Abacos. I half wish I'd bought the Nicholas Sparks book instead.

Particularly, the very close relationship between Clara and Brahms were they lovers or not? And I didn't learn anything about either person, why they loved each other, etc. As the stories unfold one becomes involved in two affairs, the present with Jeanette and Reinhardt and the past between Clara, Robert and ultimately Johannes. Starting out with Jeanette, a woman and single mother of a young daughter, who is recovering from a divorce, we learn of her struggles to find her way, as she writes her first book. The title is very apt, because Ellen and others in the book certainly have a bitter hill to overcome in their struggles to find fulfillment. It is a haunting you won't soon forget.

She speaks about the writing life, how she became a writer, and the myriad issues in her books. And when he inevitably proposes hey, it is a romance novel after all , she never gives him an answer. All the while, the divorcee is supposed to be writing a book about the well-known love affair between Clara Schumann and Johnannes Brahms. The modern character works for me, but I was less sure of her guy, Hart. They had three books for adults - one I already read and loved , one by Nicholas Sparks no thanks and this book. Two seemingly arbitrary questions are proven to be inter-related in Good Things I Wish You by A. Rarely do all the disparate elements of a novel come together, and resonate, as beautifully as they do in Blue Water.

There is nothing I hate like reading the same book over and over with different characters hello, Mary Higgins Clark, I am talking to you. At forty-two, Jeanette Hochmann—newly divorced from her husband of more than a decade—struggles to reassemble her life with her young daughter. Two completely different woman, living many decades apart, yet sharing so many similarities and common traits. The tale of Clara Schumann, a world renowned female pianist, her husband well-known composer Robert Schumann and the young protege Johannes Brahms. I have to say that I was beyond thrilled when I saw the photographs enclosed throughout the book.
